Saeima commitee supports prosecution of MP Jakovins

Juris Jakovins, a member of the Saeima and a doctor from the Greens and Farmers Union (ZZS) faction, will be handed over for criminal prosecution, according to the Saeima Mandates, Ethics and Submissions Committee's decision October 29.

The final decision has yet to be taken by the Saeima.

Jakovins, who is also a general practitioner, is involved in a criminal case in which a lawyer - according to the Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau (KNAB) - illegally obtained the submission of a forged doctor's certificate in court to justify a lawyer's absence from the court hearing.

The vote after the discussion was not unanimous, but by a large margin, said committee chairman Jānis Vucāns from ZZS.

"We all want to get clarity. Both the Saeima as a whole, so that the prestige of the Saeima is not jeopardized. As a representative of the Greens and Farmers Union faction, I can also say that we are interested in finding out the truth and we are interested in this issue being resolved legally," Vucāns said.

The Saeima will still have to decide on Jakovins' extradition for prosecution. It is expected to do so at a sitting on November 7.
