MP Pučka presents unconvincing Latvian skills again

MP Viktors Pučka (For Stability!) will be administratively punished for not speaking Latvian well enough. The MP had voluntarily appeared for a language test last week but failed it. Pučka and his party member Jefimijs Klementjevs could also be sent to the language test again by the rest of the Saeima - a vote on this is planned for this week, Latvian Television reports.

Pučka had presented himself for the test at the State Language Centre and his language skills were assessed as insufficient. Therefore, the MP will receive an administrative fine, according to information available to Latvian Television (LTV). Pučka refused to say how he fared during the test. He said he would not comment and slammed the door when asked by LTV how he assessed his language skills.

Pučka might have another chance to prove his language skills. The Saeima will decide this week whether to send him and his colleague for a national language test, this time at the National Center for Education, compulsorily.

If the Saeima decides to send the two MPs to the test, they will have to do it within five months. The test can be taken twice. If it is established that the Member's knowledge of Latvian does not meet the requirements, the Saeima will have to decide on the Member's expulsion from the Saeima.
