In an extraordinary session before its scheduled sitting on February 23, the Saeima considered and approved a draft decision prepared by the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Saeima to mark the anniversary of Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine.

The document titled "On the anniversary of Russia's war of aggression against Ukrainereiterates the Saeima's "strongest condemnation of Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine, unwavering support for the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders," and "demands that Russia immediately cease all military operations in Ukraine and withdraw all forces and military equipment from all internationally recognized territory of Ukraine without any conditions."

"Russia's aggression against Ukraine is indisputably a clear violation of the UN Charter, to which the international community must respond in order to protect global security and the international order based on universally recognized rules," deputies declared

The Saeima also called on the Euro-Atlantic community and its partners to implement "a comprehensive international isolation of Russia, including in terms of membership in such international organizations and structures as the UN Security Council" and for those responsible for Russian war crimes to face justice at an ad hoc international tribunal.

The declaration also noted that countries such as Belarus and Iran are complicit in violations of international law and declared the Russian Federation to be "currently the greatest threat to peace and international law both in Europe and around the world."

The Saeima passed the declaration by 78 votes to zero, with 9 member of the 'For Stability!' party recording a "no vote". There are 100 Saeima deputies in total.
