Latvian Saeima will meet in person as of September

The Saeima Bureau and the Faction Council agreed unanimously today Saeima will meet on-site as of September 2, and that members without a Covid-19 certificate will be able to attend with a negative Covid-19 test, LETA reported August 24.

According to the Speaker of the Saeima, Ināra Mūrniece (National Alliance), this solution has been accepted by law experts and epidemiologists. Mūrniece said that testing was intended to be a 'more inclusive approach', enabling all members to participate in the meeting.

If the incidence of Covid-19 increases and the 14-day cumulative index reaches a point where the Disease Prevention and Control Center deems it necessary to reinforce safety measures, Saeima will move the meetings to a remote environment, as before.

Experts surveyed by the Saeima have indicated that human rights and the Constitution do not prevent requesting a negative Covid-19 test for work in the Saeima. The Bureau has established that an absolute majority of Members have obtained a Covid-19 certificate in the last half-year. A small number of Saeima deputies will not have done so.

The Saeima meetings are scheduled to take place in person from September 2.
