MP Grevcova under scrutiny yet again for claims about occupation of Latvia

Glorija Grevcova, the Saeima deputy from the For Stability! party, accused for providing false information to the Central Election Commission (CVK), has again hit the spotlight with claims denying the occupation of Latvia on her TikTok channel, Latvian Radio reported on January 23.

Last Sunday, January 22, following a visit to the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia, the scandal-prone member of parliament published a video on the social network TikTok, saying that she was in the “so-called Museum of Occupation”. She also stated that facts do not align with those presented at the museum, and that the tour guide has told his own “parallel, fictional history”, as she emphasized in her video.

“I will remind you that the name of the museum is the Museum of occupation. That's how we live. We looked at all the exhibits, and we realized how we are fooled, how we are fooled... If I thought we had propaganda before, then when you pass through this museum, you know what it is – real propaganda,” Grevcova said in her video.

Saeima deputy Edmunds Jurēvics (New Unity), following these statements, has made an application to the Prosecutor's Office, asking to assess potential violations of the Criminal Law in the published material, namely crimes against peace and signs of justifying war.

“In this case, the MP has stepped over all red lines, mocking the repressed and communist terror victims. Therefore, I have addressed the Prosecutor General of Latvia to initiate criminal proceedings against this Member. Because we cannot allow a Member of the Saeima of the Republic of Latvia to mock, in fact, people who have suffered from Communist terror. I believe that [she] also obviously denies, or at least justifies, the fact of the occupation of Latvia,” Jurēvics told Latvian Radio.

Edvīns Šņore, Saeima deputy of the National Alliance, said: "It is blatant sneering at the victims of occupation, an actual denial of occupation. We believe that this is totally unacceptable. Let us turn to the Saeima Mandate, Ethics and Submissions Committee with an appropriate application, because we believe that this kind of action is incompatible with the parliamentary mandate."

Grevcova published another video on TikTok Monday, which stated that she did not deny the fact of the occupation of Latvia, but in her opinion, the museum still "did not provide all the facts, because there are many more sources than the museum shows". Many of the facts were also misrepresented, according to Grevcova.

Her comments also provoked outrage and numerous calls for police action on social media.
