Saeima committee supports criminal prosecution of MP Grevcova

Take note – story published 1 year ago

Members of the Saeima Mandate, Ethics and Submissions Commission decided unanimously on Wednesday, December 28, to ask the Saeima to agree to the continuation of the criminal proceedings against the deputy Glorija Grevcova (For Stability!).

As reported earlier by LSM, before the 14th Saeima elections, Grevcova claimed that she worked at woodworking company SIA "Dolo" as an adviser in her official filing to the Central Election Commission (CVK). However, according to the company itself, Grevcova was only employed in a junior capacity at the company several years ago for little more than a year, and certainly not as an adviser. A similar issue also arose in the 'education' category of the official report.

Grevcova's lawyer argued that there were no victims of Grevcova's actions, and therefore, in his opinion, the continuation of the prosecution should not be accepted.

Grevcova said mass media had made her the “biggest criminal in the country” by distracting attention from “real problems”, though there is no evidence they didn't write about other things because they were writing about her fabrications instead. She also added that other parliamentarians could face similar charges tomorrow, though she didn't name them or say what bogus information they might have provided.

President of the Commission Jānis Vucāns (Greens and Farmers Union, ZZS) noted that false information could have an impact on the results of the elections, because voters look at the resume of potential members before making their choice to gauge their suitability for office.

The final decision on this issue will have to be taken by the Saeima. At the moment, the parliament is on an intersession break. The next sitting of the parliament is likely to take place on January 12, 2023. There is also the possibility of announcing an emergency meeting at any time.
