Saeima deputy may be prosecuted by anti-corruption cops

The Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau (KNAB) is in favor of the initiation of a criminal prosecution against sitting Saeima deputy Aldis Adamovičs, according to unofficial information cited by Latvian Television.

LTV says the case could be related to deputies' compensation payments.

Adamovičs, a member of the New Unity party of Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš, confirmed to LTV that he has been invited to attend a sitting of the Saeima Mandate, Ethics and Submissions Commission on October 7 which will decide whether to recommend waiving his parliamentary immunity to allow a criminal prosecution.

Adamovičs said he does not know anything more about the case ahead of the meeting, and confirmed that KNAB had assigned him the status of a suspect in criminal proceedings, and that he had given a statement to KNAB.

Ironically, Adamovičs is himself a member of the Saeima Mandate, Ethics and Submissions Committee. Asked whether he would take part in the vote on permission to prosecute himself, Adamovičs did not answer.

In accordance with the Rules of Procedure of the Saeima, the parliament decides in a vote on consent to initiate criminal prosecution against a member of the Saeima based on the report of the Mandate, Ethics and Submissions Commission.
