The service inspection initiated by the State Police in connection with the harassment and murder of a woman in Jēkabpils municipality should have finished on Tuesday, and it has revealed signs of disciplinary violations have been identified, Ruks said.
“This process is accordingly directed within the framework of a disciplinary investigation,” said the Chief of the State Police, noting that the responsibility of several persons, including the Head of State Police's Austrumzemgale precinct (former Jēkabpils), Rolands Bērziņš, is being assessed in this case.
Ruks also pointed out that regardless of what the outcome will be, Bērziņš will lose the post of chief of the Austrumzemgale police station and will not take senior positions in the police in the near future. “Definitely, if there is no dismissal from service, then certainly no leading position in any case,” the Chief of the State Police said.
Ruks reiterated that he had no information about the long-persecuted woman in Jēkabpils, her multiple appeals for help, and the many criminal proceedings initiated. “I'm very sorry I couldn't get involved before this tragic event had happened,” said Ruks.
The Chief of the State Police confirmed that the suspect Leons Rusiņš had still not been found, although all the maximum instruments had been “activated” by the State Police. He might have committed suicide or run away.
