Hunting death investigation completed

Last fall, an individual was shot dead during a hunt in Stopiņi parish of Ropaži district, in which a high-ranking State Police (VP) official was among the three participants.

At the end of May of this year, the Internal Security Bureau (IDB) – which investigates the police themselves –sent a criminal case to the prosecutor's office for the initiation of criminal prosecution against a former high-ranking official of the State Police for the killing of a person during hunting.

In the course of the pre-trial investigation, the Office of Internal Security obtained evidence that it was the police official who fired the fatal shot.

During the pre-trial investigation, a non-custodial security measure was applied to the former VP official.

The IDB drew attention to the fact that the prosecutor's office now decides on the further course of the criminal case and that no person can be considered guilty of committing a criminal offense until his guilt has been proven in accordance with the procedure provided for in the Criminal Procedure Law.

The statement fro the IDB did not name any of the people involved (as is standard practise). Unofficial information indicated that businessman Jānis Garkalns was the victim of the shooting. The news about the hunt coincided with the moment when the Deputy Chief of the State Police, Riga Police Chief General Juris Šulte suddenly announced his retirement.
