Big migrant smuggling operation stopped in Latvia Tuesday

The State Police in cooperation with the State Border Guard on Tuesday October 8 morning carried out a large scale operation to stop migrant smuggling.

46 illegal migrants were detained. The group had tried to move using a vehicle painted like a police van.

Evita Galviņa, Head of the East Zemgale Precinct of the Zemgale Regional Directorate of the State Police, pointed out that this is a novelty that offenders forge police colors and cars (forged number plates from a real crew).

The State Police did not elaborate further on how the offenders got the stickers and the lights.

The services stopped the van after continuous pursuit from the Belarusian border.

Traffic is temporarily blocked in the Staburags parish of Aizkraukle municipality, road Aizkraukle-Jēkabpils (P76) at kilometer 17.

Police and Border Guard are still looking for one person, a driver. It is a man, around 180 cm in height, light skin, light hair, and dark clothes.

"The driver of the car did not comply. He endangered the life and health of pedestrians, himself and other road users. Also the health of the people in the car. Violated the rules of the road by speeding. Police officers decided to use a firearm to stop the person," Guntis Pujāts, head of the State Border Guard Service, said on Latvian Radio's "Afternoon" program.

Residents are asked to report suspicious persons by calling 112.
