Car arsonist on the loose in Rēzekne

Seven cars have been damaged by arson in Rēzekne overnight. Two were completely burnt, covered with liquids. The identity of the perpetrator has not been established, Latvian Television reported on September 10.

In the courtyard of the apartment blocks, the remains of one completely burnt car show signs of burning. The crime took place in the middle of the night on Monday.

"A flammable fluid was used and it was set on fire. Two cars are known to have been set on fire at first, and then the flames spread to five more cars," said Jūlija Jurāne, spokesperson for the Latgale Regional Directorate of the State Police.

There were other incidents, residents say.

"The car's alarm worked, probably all three days. Nobody paid attention, nobody had any part. Complete indifference," said Olga, a local resident.

There was also criticism of the work of the police. A few months ago, cars were stolen in a nearby yard and the thief was seen on CCTV, but was not caught.

The police are opening criminal proceedings for arson. Such a crime is punishable by up to ten years' imprisonment and probation supervision.
