Prison sentence verdict in homophobic assault case in Latvia

On Monday, October 14, the Latgale District Court sentenced two men in Daugavpils to seven months in prison for beating two members of the LGBT+ community.

On the evening of May 4 2023, two people were beaten in Daugavpils, allegedly for belonging to the LGBTQ+ community.

The victim, Līvajs Amareins, allegedly received more than 20 blows to the head. The incident took place after a community-organized picket called "Indifference Kills", where participants expressed support for the adoption of the Istanbul Convention.

The charge was hooliganism causing bodily harm to the victims.

At the hearing, the defendant, Eldars Zaripovs, was found guilty and sentenced to seven months' imprisonment, which came into force immediately after the sentence was handed down. Zaripovs will also have to pay court costs of €840, as well as property damages and moral compensation to the victims, totaling just under €5,000.

Neither the defendant nor his lawyer commented on the verdict, while the prosecutor in the case, Igors Kravcevics, said that an appeal could be decided after the full verdict is available.
