Four Latvians detained for helping illegal migration

Border guards in the Augšdaugava municipality have detained four Latvian citizens for helping 27 migrants to stay illegally in the territory of Latvia, the Border Guard said July 24.

On Tuesday, July 23, border guards stopped a Chrysler Grand Voyager driven by a Latvian citizen in Augšdaugava municipality. During a document check, it was found that a Latvian citizen was in the passenger seat of the car and 16 persons were in the cabin without travel documents, valid visas, or residence permits.

A short time later, during the investigation, two more Latvian citizens were detained on suspicion of providing support to migrants in a homestead in the Augšdaugava region.

11 more persons without travel documents, valid visas, or residence permits were found in the basement of the house.

Criminal proceedings have been initiated against Latvian citizens for knowingly providing a person with an opportunity to stay illegally in the Republic of Latvia if committed by an organized group (Article 285(1)(3) of the Criminal Law).

The above-mentioned acts are punishable by imprisonment for a term of two to eight years.
