Illegal TV distributor caught in Daugavpils, Latvia

Last week, police officers carried out a search in Daugavpils on suspicion of providing illegal television. Criminal proceedings were initiated against a man born in 1966, police said November 29.

Preliminary information shows that the person installed equipment in the territories of Daugavpils and Augšdaugava, enabling users to watch television programs that the National Council for Electronic Media has banned from broadcasting, including distribution, in the territory of Latvia.

During the investigation, the law enforcement authorities established that the illegal television service was provided to approximately 130 subscribers at different times.

The State Police is continuing its pre-trial investigation and the criminal proceedings have been qualified under Article 148(1) of the Criminal Code for infringement of copyright or related rights where substantial damage has been caused. Such an offense is punishable by up to two years' imprisonment temporary deprivation of liberty, probation supervision, community service, or a fine.
