Latvian Security Service asks for prosecution of potential terrorist

On November 22, the State Security Service (VDD) asked the Prosecutor's Office to prosecute a Latvian citizen for allegedly preparing for terrorist attacks and propagandizing terrorism, the VDD said in a statement.

Evidence obtained in the VDD investigation shows that the suspect was purposely trained for terrorism, i.e. received instructions, knowledge, and practical skills to carry out or promote terrorism.

The Service has also established that the person systematically engaged in public praise and justification of terrorism, as well as dissemination of material praising, justifying, and inciting terrorism on the communication platform "Telegram".

Criminal proceedings against the person were initiated on July 11, 2023. The State Security Service (VDD) started to pay close attention to the activities of this Latvian citizen, having detected his active involvement in correspondence on the "Telegram" platform with pro-right extremism and pro-terrorism communication groups, which indicated that the person might be radicalized.

VDD says he was also involved in the administration of several international communication groups, and his activities contributed to the promotion of hostility and violence against various minorities.

During the investigation, the VDD detected the person's efforts to purchase tactical equipment and substances necessary for the manufacture of explosives. In addition, the VDD found out that the Latvian citizen had individually sent to several persons information useful for terrorist acts: instructions for making weapons and explosives, as well as video recordings of terrorist acts.
