During the Christmas holiday, 52 drivers under the influence were caught on Latvia's roads, Normunds Krapsis, chief of the State Police, told Latvian Radio December 28.

Krapsis said that overall the holidays were peaceful, but the trends in road safety are unchanged. Unfortunately the number of drunk drivers this year was 52, including 5 drivers under the influence of narcotic substances. Last year, 37 drunk drivers were caught over Christmas holidays.

286 accidents have been reported during holidays, with 25 people injured, fortunately, no fatalities.

The police also continued to control compliance with the COVID-19 restrictions, and 181 proceedings were launched for various offences, mostly infringements related to non-compliance with assembly restrictions and non-use of masks.
