In 2021, some 139 000 non-EU citizens were refused entry into the EU at one of its external borders. A quarter of the total number of refusals were recorded in Hungary (34 700; 25 %) and almost one fifth (26 200; 19 %) were recorded in Poland, according to data published May 19 by Eurostat.

For Latvia the figure was 855 non-EU citizens refused entry in 2021. While accounting for just 0.6% of the EU total, it was an increase of around a third on 2020's figure of 640.

Interestingly, more than three quarters of Latvia's entry refusals (78%) in 2021 took place at the air border (Rīga Airport), not the land border (19%).

In 2021, 681 200 were found to be illegally present in one of the EU Member States. This was up 22% compared with 2020 (557 500). The number of non-EU citizens issued with an order to leave an EU Member State was 342 100. Following an order to leave, 82 700 non-EU citizens were returned to another country (including other EU Member States).

890 people from non-EU countries were ordered to leave Latvia in 2021, down on 1,015 in 2020.

Ukrainian citizens accounted for the largest number of refusals at EU borders in 2021 (50 200). The next largest numbers were recorded for citizens of Albania (18 600) and Moldova (9 100).

Among EU Member States, France reported the largest number of non-EU citizens ordered to leave its territory in 2021 (125 500), followed by Germany (31 500) and Greece (28 800).
