Another arrest in 'rush-hour' murder of insolvency administrator in Latvia

Continuing the investigation into the murder case of insolvency administrator and lawyer Mārtiņš Bunkus, the State Police have detained another person, police said August 10.

In May this year, police announced that they had succeeded in clarifying the chain of virtually all parties involved in the killing, ranging from the commissioning party to the organizer and executor. On May 24, several persons, including the executor and the commissioning party, were detained.

While continuing criminal proceedings, the State Police detained another person in Riga on 9 August.

The police indicated that the investigation is still active, so it is still refraining from more extensive comments, including on the details of the detainees and the investigation.

At the same time, the police shall also invite those persons who have not provided all the information known to them in the context of the investigation of the case, or persons who may further testify, to cooperate with the police and come forward. State police guarantee anonymity.

On May 30, 2018, insolvency administrator Mārtiņš Bunkus was shot in broad daylight in his vehicle. Though the police said they had enough evidence later that same year, no arrests were ever made. The murder caused broad public resonance, including a lawsuit by Bunkus' family against MP Aldis Gobzems for defamation.
