Take note – story published 1 year ago

In connection with the suspicion of publicly supporting the crimes committed by Russia against Ukraine and its citizens and the violation of international sanctions, the State Security Service (VDD) has detained a suspect and applied a security instrument, VDD said August 1.

Last weekend, VDD carried out criminal proceedings authorized by the court at three locations in Rīga and its vicinity. A suspect was detained on Saturday, July 30.

Criminal proceedings were launched on July 29 this year in accordance with the public glorification and acquittal of crimes against peace and war crimes, as well as the violation of sanctions imposed by the European Union (EU).

Information gathered during the VDD investigation shows that a person in several Russian propaganda resources justified the war crimes launched by Russia in Ukraine and the Russian armed forces, as well as distributed disinformation about Latvia and its allied countries with a view to discrediting them. The information at the service's disposal also shows that the person has cooperated with a person on the EU sanctions list.

During criminal proceedings, VDD has obtained a large number of media and documents and is currently analysing their content, and the investigation continues, VDD said.
