Belarusian citizen in Latvia detained on suspicion of spying

The State Security Service (VDD), in cooperation with the Defence Intelligence and Security Service, has detained a Belarusian citizen suspected of spying in the interests of the Belarusian special service, the VDD said on April 11.

According to the VDD, the person has allegedly gathered information about the National Armed Forces and critical infrastructure facilities in the interests of the Belarusian special service, including hidden filming and photography.

Criminal proceedings against a person were initiated on February 15 of this year on the unlawful collection of confidential information for the purpose of transferring it directly or through another person, or of illegally collecting or transferring other information to foreign intelligence on its behalf, directly or through another person.

The person has the status of a suspect and is in custody. The investigation in the present case is ongoing and the VDD is abstaining from further comments.
