One Belarusian and one Ukrainian citizen have been detained on Sunday in Krāslava municipality for attempted transportation of persons who have illegally crossed the country's border, the State Border Guard said September 5.

On Sunday, the border guard, in cooperation with the State Police, attempted to stop a Volkswagen Touareg near the village of Neikšāni, around three kilometers from the state border. The driver did not comply with the requirements and left the scene at high speed. A car chase was launched which resulted in the vehicle getting into a road accident.

The detainees, a Belarusian citizen born in 1996 and a Ukrainian citizen born in 2000, confessed during the interrogations that they were to await people who would have crossed the state border, most likely illegally, and move them to other European countries.

The detained persons were in Latvia without valid travel documents. Criminal proceedings have been initiated against them for premeditating a crime.
