Riga Regional Court's spokesman Raimonds Locmelis confirmed to LETA that the court had decided to release Rjazanskis on bail, but declined to comment on the bail amount as the court was reviewing the case behind closed doors.
The bail money has been paid into an account indicated by the court, which will complete the bail process tomorrow, added Locmelis.
The next hearing in the case has been scheduled for January 11 next year.
Prosecutor Velta Zaluksne told LETA that she had objected to the attorneys' bail request. There is no guarantee that Rjazanskis will appear at the next hearing, therefore Zaluksne believes there are no grounds for releasing Rjazanskis on bail.
The first-instance court was reviewing the case for several years, while Riga Regional Court received the case approximately two years ago.
EUR 0.5 million may be the largest bond ever posted in Latvia. In 2015, Riga Vidzeme District Court released former Latvian Railways CEO Ugis Magone on EUR 400,000 bail. His case is still continuing.
As reported, the other defendant in the Rjazanskis case, Jurmala prosecutor Irina Bogdanova, was sentenced to four years in prison in May 2015. She and Rjazanskis were both arrested in court.
Bogdanova (assisted by Rjazanskis) had demanded a total of EUR 35,571 for favorable manipulation of a case that Bogdanova was working on. She was apprehended in October 2008 after receiving the first half of the bribe (EUR 21,343).
