On February 13, the Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau (KNAB) asked for the prosecution of eight persons for fictitious employment at the Rīga City municipal foundation “Riga Tourism Development Bureau” (RTAB), KNAB said.

KNAB has proposed to prosecute six individuals for large-scale fraud, as well as two former RTAB board members for supporting the criminal offenses.

Evidence obtained by the KNAB's pre-trial investigation shows that six persons involved in criminal offenses had been fictitiously employed at the municipal establishment, thereby defrauding large amounts of financial resources. The criminal offenses investigated were committed between April 2, 2012, and January 31, 2019.

The KNAB's pre-trial investigation also revealed that one former state official was faking service, i.e. signing and using documents containing knowingly false information relating to work trip.

As a result of the criminal activities, the municipality of Riga has suffered losses of EUR 280,822.73, KNAB said.

The KNAB has concluded the relevant pre-trial investigation. The prosecutor's office should decide on the way forward in the criminal case.
