Cyber attacks on Latvia grew rapidly over past half year

Take note – story published 1 year ago

The number of cyber attacks against Latvia has increased several times in the last half-year, Latvian Radio reported on August 24.

The attacks are targeted toward public and municipal resources and private sector companies, banks, media, medical authorities, and critical infrastructure.

Part of these attacks is the responsibility of the Russian aggression group Killnet. The other attacks, on the other hand, relate to one of the branches of this group or to pro-Russian individuals.

“In the last half-year, we see a significant increase in so-called Denial-of-Service (DoS) attacks, which are in principle a trend of politically motivated attacks. But these DoS attacks are a few hours or a few days long, and in most cases, no consequences remain. Banks, different financial institutions, are attacked virtually every week. Most of all, you don't notice it, but the number is substantial enough - it's hundreds of attacks, “ said Gints Mālkalnietis, a cybersecurity expert at the cyberspace security company Cert.lv.
