On July 6, the Kurzeme District Court in the first instance found an entrepreneur in Liepāja guilty of storing hazardous waste and sentenced him to ten months conditionally, according to the State Environmental Service (VVD).

The head of the company illegally stored at least 91 tonnes of hazardous waste in Liepāja.

This is the second waste crime conviction in the history of Latvia, said VVD.

The Environmental Service welcomed the increasing priority of environmental crime in the work of the State Police and Prosecutor's Office. “Waste crime, as a form of organized crime in Europe and Latvia, is increasingly threatening the environment and the interests of society. The awareness of these crimes and their danger is very important for combating crimes,” said VVD Director-General Elita Baklāne-Ansberga in a statement to the media.

The crime was identified by VVD inspectors in 2019. The process lasted a total of three years.
