The Latvian State Police have for the first time fined a resident the maximum penalty for violating the Covid-19 quarantine, reported the LETA newswire April 13.

On April 10, police carried out a check whether a man (born 1989) was observing his mandatory quarantine at his residence. Police then determined that the man was violating his quarantine by driving around in his vehicle.

For his irresponsible behavior, police fined the man EUR 2,000 - the maximum fine for individuals for breaking quarantine laws.

Police also fined another person in Aluksne EUR 1,000 for not observing self-distancing requirements.

The fine for private individuals breaking state of emergency requirements is between EUR 10 to 2,000.

"If you have information about someone who is not observing the restrictions in place on assembly, self-isolation or physical distance, take action and call the police - 110! ? You are one call away to possibly save someone's life and reduce the spread of the virus!" the State Police said on their Facebook page.
