The Prosecutor's Office (PO) has sent a criminal case to court accusing one person of training for terrorism, and distributing content glorifying or inciting terrorism, it has announced. In Latvia, this is the first such criminal case to be brought before a court.

According to the indictment, an unnamed man "sought information about the tools and methods used in terrorist attacks through Internet resources in order to carry out and promote terrorism. The found material contained praising of terrorist acts, calls for such acts, as well as detailed instructions for conducting terrorist acts and raising funds.

"Thus, the accused gained knowledge about the manufacture and practical use of explosives, firearms, harmful and dangerous substances, as well as other dangerous objects and devices for the purpose of committing terrorist offenses," the PO said in a release.

It is alleged that the accused also made a video calling for terrorist acts, stating that he was planning to commit a mass shooting at a synagogue, and calling on other people to do the same. Using the communication application Telegram, the accused sent the video to other persons.

The case has been referred to the Vidzeme Suburb Court of the City of Riga.

Though the PO did not name the individual concerned, he has been named by the LETA news agency as Rihards Daugavietis.
