The Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) of Latvia this year is 59, two points up from last year.
Last year Latvia was in 42nd place among the countries included in the list, whereas this year it has climbed to the 36th. Over the past ten years, Latvia's index has grown by 10 points.
Lithuania is in 34th place and Estonia is in 13th place.
This year, Denmark, Finland, and New Zealand rank highest. Syria, South Sudan, and Somalia rank lowest.
Head of Latvia's transparency organization Delna, Inese Tauriņa, said in a statement that altogether Latvia is moving in the right direction but the changes were not happening quickly enough to rank among the leaders. Latvia's rank is still below the EU average.
"The analysis of the 2021 CPI clearly shows that Latvia's downfalls are the integrity of the political and private sector, as well as prevention of waste of public resources, including EU funds," Tauriņa was quoted.
The Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) ranks 180 countries and territories by their perceived levels of public sector corruption according to experts, using a scale from 0 to 100, where 0 is very corrupt and 100 is very clean.
