The Zemgale District Court has sentenced a man to 14 years in prison for sexual abuse of a child over a prolonged period, the prosecutor's office said January 2.

The unnamed individual committed his crimes over a period of 10 years, starting when the victim was only five years old. The accused was described as being a neighbor of the victim's family and an old acquaintance, who often came to visit and with whom the parents of the victim socialised. He also came on the pretext of helping the victim with her mathematics homework.

He was accused of a wide range of serious illegal activity with the young girl involving various sexual acts and the showing of pornography.

"With his actions, the accused threatened the victim's right to normal physical, mental and sexual development," the prosecutor's office said.

At the age of 15, the victim realized that the defendant was committing criminal acts with her, and told her parents about the incidents. Surprisingly, the parents chose not contact the police immediately. The victim asked her parents to take her to a psychologist, to which the parents agreed. Encouraged by the specialist, the girl wrote a report to the police, on the basis of which a criminal trial was at last initiated.

The accused did not admit his guilt in committing the criminal offenses charged against him, stating that the victim and the victim's family slandered him.

The court decided otherwise and found him guilty, sentencing him to imprisonment for 14 years and six months and probation supervision for five years. The verdict is subect to appeal.
