Police chief: There's enough evidence in rush hour murder case

Investigation into the murder of attorney at law Mārtiņš Bunkus is nearing completion - there is enough evidence to determine who committed the murder and how, the State Police's Chief Ints Ķuzis said in an interview with LNT television December 4.

Ķuzis denied that the investigation was taking too much time, and said that there was enough evidence for the police to tell the public who, and how, murdered Bunkus.

The late Bunkus' brother, Kristaps said this past October that his family was not happy with the police's work, and criticized the police for not telling the family anything about the investigation.

Kristaps Bunkus said that an analysis of publicly available facts about the police investigation proved that the investigative activities were of poor quality, which raised questions about further investigative actions being planned by the police.

The Bunkus family is dissatisfied with the State Police and Ķuzis' "arrogant" attitude, as well as Ķuzis' reproaches that the family had not presented to the investigators all information available to it. Bunkus' brother said it was the police that had no interest in contacting the family.

As reported, Mārtiņš Bunkus was shot dead in the morning of May 30 as he was driving his white Range Rover along a tree-lined street near Brethren Cemetery in Riga. Presumably he was shot from a tarp-covered pickup truck that was seen in the vicinity and was later found burning not far from the scene of the crime. His professional activity appears to be the mostly likely motive for the killing, and investigation is under way.
