Monday, July 18, a person who was present at events in Rīga on May 20, when a pupil was beaten while carrying a Ukrainian flag, was fired from the State Police (VP). The Internal Security Bureau (IDB) is investigating alleged negligence, newswire LETA reported July 18.

On May 20, after a march in favor of the removal of Soviet monuments from Latvia, a man attacked another young man who had a Ukrainian flag on his shoulders, causing bodily harm.

Allegedly, the person fired from the police is the spouse of the attacker.

IDB didn't provide further comments apart from the confirmation that criminal proceedings had been launched for the negligence of duty of a public official.

In the meantime, the police officer was fired from the service on Monday, said the State Police (VP). The woman had already been suspended from her duties during the investigation.

The man who beat the pupil has been prosecuted and sentenced to 200 hours of community service. He has paid all the required moral compensation, but the victim's lawyer stressed that only a real prison sentence would change the understanding of such crimes and appealed the prosecutor's decision.
