The Internal Security Bureau (IDB) said October 26 it has sent a criminal case to the prosecutor's office for the initiation of a criminal prosecution against a Rīga region state Police Official for illegally disclosing classified information.

"In the course of the pre-trial investigation, evidence was obtained that the State Police official, using the information systems intended for the performance of official duties, obtained information about a person known to him being wanted in a criminal proceeding in the records of the State Police and disclosed the obtained information to a private person. As a result of the disclosure of information, it was difficult to obtain evidence to achieve the goals of the criminal process," the IDB said.

In connection with the incident, the State Police official in question is subject to non-custodial security measures, including suspension from duties.

In the first nine months of 2022, the Internal Security Bureau has initiated 35 criminal proceedings within its competence and conducted pre-trial investigations in a total of 113 criminal proceedings.

The Internal Security Bureau is the institution that polices the police themselves, as well as other departments subordinate to the Interior Ministry such as the State Fire and Rescue Service and State Border Guard Service.
