The State Police said January 6 they have concluded their investigation into the brutal murder of a woman last May and want two men charged as a result.

On May 29, 2022, the law enforcement officers of the Riga Kurzeme precinct of the State Police Riga Region Administration received a call to the Bolderāja suburb of Rīga in connection with a conflict in one of the apartments.

Upon arrival at the scene, the body of a woman born in 1984 with two stab wounds was found in the stairwell. It was established that the body was thrown from an apartment, where the possible culprits - two men - were immediately arrested.

A man born in 1967 was recognized as a murder suspect and placed in detention. The man was in prison for four months, after which, by the decision of the investigating judge, he was released, and a non-custodial security measure was imposed on him.

Another man born in 1971 was also recognized as a suspect in connection with trying to cover-up the crime, and was placed on non-custodial bail.

In line with standard practise, neither the suspects nor the victim were named by police.

During the investigation, it was established that a conflict broke out between two men and a woman, during which the victim was stabbed with a knife, which resulted in her death. The suspects, being under the influence of alcohol, took the victim's body out of the apartment, leaving it in the stairwell, after which the man born in 1971, attempted to dispose of the murder weapon and started cleaning the scene of the crime.

According to the information available to the police, the deceased had come to the scene to defend her girlfriend, with whom one of the male suspects had had an argument. It is believed the deceased woman did not know the men before the incident.

If found guilty, murder is punishable by life imprisonment or deprivation of liberty for a period of five to 20 years and probation supervision for a period of up to three years.

Attempting to cover up a serious crime is punishable by deprivation of liberty for a period of up to two years or by temporary deprivation of liberty, or by probation supervision, or by community service, or by a fine.
