As previously reported, Lindermans was detained by the Security Police for inciting ethnic hatred, calling for mass disturbances and anti-Latvian activities. Riga Vidzeme District Court's decision to remand Lindermans in custody was appealed by Lindermans' attorneys on May 14.
LETA also reported, another well-known pro-Russia activist, Aleksandrs Gaponenko, the leader of the Congress of Non-citizens was detained on April 21 for anti-Latvian activities as part of a different criminal proceeding.
Lindermans was detained following a rally on March 31, organized by the Latvian Russian Union to protest the transition to the Latvian-language-only education in high schools. Lindermans delivered a speech during the rally.
