Saeima approves extension of state of emergency on Belarus border

Take note – story published 1 year ago

On Thursday, May 19, the Saeima supported the government's decision to extend the emergency situation on the Latvian-Belarusian border.

The changes envisage extending the emergency situation in Ludza, Krāslava and Augšdaugava districts, as well as in Daugavpils city until August 10, 2022.

The state of emergency was declared in August last year, taking into account the rapid increase in the number of cases of illegal crossing of the Latvian-Belarusian state border, as well as assessing the large number of cases of illegal crossing of the Lithuanian-Belarusian state border previously recorded in Lithuania.

These illegal attempts to enter the EU were facilitated by the Lukashenko regime's state-sponsored people smuggling efforts.
