On Thursday, October 20, in Rīga, the State Security Service (VDD) detained an aggressive supporter of Russia's advanced war in Ukraine, the service said Friday.

The VDD drew attention to the person, who is a non-citizen of Latvia, after a video published in which the person repeatedly points to the need and readiness to destroy Ukrainians. The person in the video recording expresses their support for Russia by repeating messages specific to the Kremlin's war propaganda. In addition, the person expresses their readiness to turn against Ukrainian supporters in Latvia by revealing an interest in obtaining firearms in his or her possession.

In view of these circumstances, VDD initiated criminal proceedings against the person on October 19 for alleged instigation of national and ethnic hatred or unreality. Criminal proceedings have been initiated in accordance with Article 78 of the Criminal Law.

VDD noted that the person is currently in active legal proceedings for the intentional causing of serious and medium-sized bodily injury.

VDD recalls that no person shall be deemed guilty until proven in accordance with the procedures laid down by law.

The service also said that since the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24 this year, VDD has launched 27 criminal proceedings in total and has taken four criminal proceedings from the State Police in relation to hate speech and activities in support of Russian aggression and interests.
