Three charged in Bunkus murder case

Take note – story published 1 year ago

Three persons have been charged with the murder of insolvency administrator Mārtiņš Bunkus, Rīga Court District Prosecutor Aldis Lasmanis said in a press conference on Thursday, December 8.

Two individuals have been charged with incitement, in this case, ordering the murder. One of these people has also been accused of encouraging the killing. The shooter was also charged. The contract murder was found to have cost €300 thousand.

Lasmanis said that the prosecution against the organizer of the murder had not been brought because he was dead. He was a resident of Latvia who died in violent death, said Lasmanis.

Against one person, the case was terminated because there was no evidence supporting the crime.

The investigation has failed to identify one person – the driver.

No names were mentioned in the press conference but media have previously identified three of them as business partners Mihails Uļmans and Aleksandrs Babenko, plus Arkādijs Judins.

For the first time, Bunkus' murder was attempted already in 2016, when he reported threats. The murder attempt failed because the weapon didn't fire.

As previously reported by LSM, on May 30, 2018, insolvency administrator Mārtiņš Bunkus was shot in broad daylight in his vehicle in Rīga. Though the police said they had a large amount of evidence within months, no arrests were made until four years later.
