On June 24, at 8 pm, officers of the Riga Municipal Police (RPP), while patrolling the center of Rīga, received information that young people were burning a Ukrainian flag in the Vērmanes Garden park, the RPP said June 27.

On arrival at the scene, law enforcement officers met the caller who explained that the young people had recently left the scene. Police took descriptions of the young people so that they could carry out further inquiries in the neighborhood.

While inspecting the area, police officers noticed people matching the description near the Freedom Monument. In a conversation with police, two detained young people confirmed that they had burned the Ukrainian flag, aggressively explaining that it was a "rag and a Ukrainian fascist flag". In addition, it emerged that they wanted to post a video on the Tik tok social media channel to gain popularity/notoriety and provoke Ukrainian users.

At the scene in Vērmanes Garden, the remains of the burned Ukrainian flag were taken as evidence by the municipal police and handed over to the State Police, who have now launched criminal proceedings. One of the detained persons was a minor.
