Attempted attack on Latvia-Belarus border guard Monday

Over the past 24 hours, on the border of Latvia-Belarus, illegal immigrants attacked a Latvian border guard, which is considered to be an emergency, Guntis Pujāts, chief of the State Border Guard, told LETA and Latvian Radio on May 2.

A group of illegal migrants attempted to cross the border, then split up and the border guard tried to stop one of the infringers. Then the others rushed to help and attacked the border guard, shoving him, said Pujāts.

The offenders have been sent back to Belarus.

No injury has been caused to the border guard and offenders in the incident.

However, the attack on the border guard has taken place, so according to the rules of procedure it is considered an emergency, Pujāts said in an interview on Latvian Radio.

On Tuesday, May 2, the government extended for the seventh time the state of emergency in the Belarus border area due to illegal migration.
