Latvia-Belarus border infrastructure to be in place by end of 2026

The entire Latvian-Belarusian border will be equipped with technical security systems by the end of 2026, stated the head of the State Border Guard, Guntis Pujāts, in an interview on Latvian Television's "Morning Panorama" program November 7.

He said that Latvia has managed to obtain funding from the European Union worth 75 million euros, which practically covers the entire construction of the border infrastructure between Latvia and Belarus.

The border with Russia must also be completed, and money from the European Union has also been requested for this purpose.

"The Russian border will also be built, but currently the funding will ensure the construction of the Latvian-Belarusian border according to the highest standards," emphasized Pujāts.

This means that the border will be continuously monitored - there will be both video cameras and sensors.

"The entire border will be completely covered with technical systems, and every violator will be caught. The works have already started, completion is the end of 2026," promised Pujāts.

He also said that a significant increase has been achieved regarding the salaries of border guards to equalize the remuneration gap with the National Armed Forces. For the State Border Guard, 15 million euros have been earmarked in the next year's budget for salary increases, which will allow the remuneration to be increased by an average of 10% plus bonuses.

Pujāts himself is in for an additional 10,000 euro cash windfall after being named as the recipient of a government prize "for his outstanding contribution to Latvia's national security in the difficult geopolitical conditions."
