During the exercise, simulating a complex civil-military scenario, NATO's ability to comprehensively respond to today's security challenges will be tested, according to a release from the Latvian Ministry of Defense.
The NATO crisis management exercise "CMX23", which will be held this year for the 23rd year, and will include civilian and military personnel of NATO member states, Finland and Sweden, the NATO headquarters and the two Alliance Strategic Commands, as well as EU structural units. The CMX23 exercise does not involve the deployment of member states' military forces.
Although Finland and Sweden have previously participated in the NATO crisis management exercises "CMX23" as partner countries, this year they will participate in the exercises with the status of NATO invited countries for the first time.
In Latvia, state institutions, whose competence is crisis situation management and planning, decision-making and execution of related measures, will participate in these exercises.
According to NATO, "CMX 2023 will include practising comprehensive responses to a complex civil-military scenario, set in a hybrid environment" and will include staff-to-staff exchanges with the European External Action Service, the European Commission and the General Secretariat of the European Council and the Council of the European Union.
