Diāna Eglīte, press secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), confirmed to LETA, without giving the name of the person, that the ministry was aware of a possible incident - at the moment they have received information from the man's relatives about his possible detention in Belarus.
The Latvian Consulate in Vitebsk has contacted the Belarusian authorities to clarify the information. No information has been received so far.
The MFA stresses that due to the lack of rule of law in Belarus and Russia, Latvia's ability to provide assistance to citizens in these countries is very limited and the information flow is very slow. Latvia's cooperation with Belarus in the field of justice is reduced to a minimum.
The MFA representative also stressed that although Latvia has repeatedly urged its citizens not to travel to Belarus because it is risky, Latvian citizens continue to enter the country.
According to the information available to the Ministry, 13 Latvian citizens were detained in Belarus in 2022, 15 in 2023 and 11 this year.
