Defense Minister: army food supply contract to be broken

The Ministry of Defense has decided to terminate the contract with the company ZĪtari LZ, which won the scandalous procurement for food supplies to the National Armed Forces, Defense Minister Ināra Mūrniece (National Alliance) said in the Latvian Television program “Today's Question” on April 25.

As reported numerous times by LSM, The 220-million worth procurement for food supply for the Latvian National Armed Forces (NBS), which is under suspicion of unfair practices, is being investigated by the Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau (KNAB).

The Minister said: “We have made a decision to terminate this agreement. The Ministry of Defence shall be in negotiations with the relevant economic operator regarding the termination of the contract.”

At the moment, the Ministry is looking forward to a response from the company “Zītari LZ” to see whether the company agrees with the terms of termination of the agreement set by the Ministry. Whether there would be any penalties depends on both parties.

Regarding the criminal proceedings initiated in the case, Mūrniece said it would clarify the circumstances and claim responsibility from the guilty party.
