Six observation towers have been built on the section of the Daugava where no fence is planned, and patrol bridges for light vehicles are being put into operation.
119 kilometers of light vehicle patrol lanes and 27 kilometers of footbridge patrol lanes will still be built along the fence, and 1.75 kilometers of pontoon patrol lanes will be completed. Infrastructure works along the land sections of the border fence are scheduled to be completed by the end of this year.
The construction of the 145-kilometre fence on the Latvian-Belarusian border was completed in July this year.
The construction of the necessary infrastructure is ongoing in the two sections where the border fence is not foreseen - six observation towers and their access roads have been built along the Daugava River. The construction of a 16.7-kilometer patrol line and five bridges to allow border guards to cross rivers and streams is also planned.
The construction of the Latvian-Russian border fence is also actively underway - currently about 86% of the total length of the border (283 kilometers) has been constructed.
Some 38 kilometers of fencing remain to be built, of which 10 kilometers are planned for this year, while 28 kilometers of fencing in particularly difficult, hard-to-access areas will be completed by the end of October next year.
