Latvia's Ministry of Defense (MoD) is to request an additional €8.9 million from the state budget in order to provide suitable facilities for the Canadian-led NATO International Battalion arriving to bolster the country's security, the LETA newswire reported April 16.

The request will be decided upon at Tuesday's regular cabinet meeting and the funds are needed to provide host nation support and other collateral obligations, LETA reported.

According to the National Armed Forces calculations €8.9m is the best estimate of initial outlay required, but the final total will depend on the exact nature and number of forces deployed.

According to the technical agreement, the main expenditure items are nutrition, drinking water, portable toilets, sinks and other equipment purchases, as well as fuel, lubricants and military logistical resources.

As previously reported, Canadian troops are expected to arrive in June and head up a more than 1,000-strong force.

But Latvian and Canadian troops are already working together, most recently in exercises Germany and soon in Latvia itself as part of the annual 'Summer Shield' drills.
