The funding shall cover expenditures incurred from April 1 to 30. EUR 792 888 will be allocated to the State Police, EUR 78 948 to the State Border Guard, and EUR 25 946 to the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs (PMLP).
EUR 70 050 is allocated to compensate for the increase in average earnings resulting from the payment of overtime work and surcharges to employees, including EUR 61 894 for the State Police, EUR 6577 for the State Border Guard, and EUR 1,579 for PMLP.
The Ministry of Interior said that in order to reduce the risks of illegal immigration, as well as to create barriers to the activities of illegal immigration planners, organizers, and performers on the border of Latvia-Belarus, the State Border Guard increased the number of secondments in the border guarding departments. On the Latvian-Russian State border, however, a reinforced border surveillance regime has been introduced to ensure more intensive monitoring and control of the State border.
The police provided support for border surveillance in order to prevent illegal crossings of the border. Officials from Riga and regional departments, as well as officials from the Latgale region administration, were appointed to provide support to the Latvian-Belarus border.
In view of the sharp increase in asylum seekers starting in August 2021, the intensity and extent of work required by the PMLP in the field of asylum seekers' proceedings, as well as the accommodation of asylum seekers, including the provision of the Covid-19 quarantine regime requirements, increased sharply.
In view of the situation on the border of Latvia-Belarus, the number of persons who submitted applications for refugee or alternative status increased significantly. On April 30, 2022, 152 persons' applications for the granting of refugee or alternative status in the Republic of Latvia were under consideration.
