Black Hawks down - and then up

Take note – story published 7 years ago

Rigans might spot some unusual cargo being transported Wednesday and Thursday, Latvia's Defense Ministry has said, flagging up the arrival of a fresh flock of the US's famous Black Hawk helicopters.

The choppers are arriving on a US Army transport ship before taking off for their operating base at the Lielvarde airfield in the center of the country.

"To support the initiatives 'Strong Europe' and 'Operation Atlantic Resolve', more than 60 US soldiers from the 501st aviation regiment, 3rd battalion have come to Latvia with five UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters. The US soldiers will practice together with National Armed Forces soldiers and will participate in the military exercises," the ministry said.

Atlantic Resolve aims to provide a continued US contribution to NATO collective security promoting peace and stability in the Baltic States and Poland plus Romania and Bulgaria, the ministry added.

Operation is deployed in Romania and Bulgaria.

So if you see helicopters buzzing in the next couple of days, it may not be as a result of mushroom pickers getting lost in the woods.
