Disinformation about NATO's Saber Strike drills analyzed

Take note – story published 5 years ago

The latest analysis by the Digital Forensic Research Lab concerning the Baltic states publicizes reaction by Russian state media to NATO exercises recently carried out in the Baltic states.

The central concern is a statement by a Russian pundit named Alexander Zhilin that only prostitutes benefit from NATO training exercises such as June's Saber Strike drills, a similar sentiment to one previously expressed by Ventspils mayor Aivars Lembergs.

A story originating on propaganda wire Sputnik was picked up by several Russian-language outlets in Latvia and the other Baltic states. However, it was not picked up at all in media using other languages, so DFR Lab's expose has probably made many more people aware of the story than would otherwise have been the case.

"Zhilin’s comments on the Saber Strike exercise were emblematic of Kremlin-owned media in the Baltics: long on assertion and short on facts," concludes the research.

The DFR research can be read in full at the organization's website.
