The Ministry of Interior has received official approval from the European Commission (EC) in June for granting €63 million for Latvian–Belarusian border security strengthening measures, the ministry said July 15.

Most of the funding is for Latvian–Belarusian border surveillance infrastructure, smart and digital surveillance, automation processes, and ensuring continuous monitoring. The State Border Guard will also receive additional technical support for the intensive monitoring of the border in the long term. The money allocated will be complemented by the financing of the State budget.

The Ministry intends to implement the first comprehensive automation project of the border guarding system in Latvia. This will prevent any attempts to illegally cross the Latvian–Belarusian border or to carry out hybrid attacks on the border by the Belarusian authorities.

“In view of the hybrid attack launched by Belarus last August, promoting irregular flows of migrants to Latvia; Lithuania, Poland, and Latvia have managed to convince the EC of the need to make additional investments in the guarding of this border. Thanks to this, we will strengthen the capacity and capacity of the State Border Guard, both on land and in the air. We will also introduce smart, digital and automated solutions to border guarding and border surveillance. This will be a substantial additional contribution to what the Latvian government and the Saeima decided on the construction of physical infrastructure on the border of Latvia and Belarus,” said Dimitrijs Trofimovs, State Secretary of the Ministry of Interior.
