The Latvian information technology security incident prevention institution CERT.LV has conducted a wide-ranging information and communication technology threat search operation to identify the presence of potential attackers in critical infrastructure systems of Latvia, the Ministry of Defense said November 29.

"Since the beginning of 2021, CERT.LV has significantly increased the number of performed threat search operations in order to successfully deter attackers from operating in Latvian networks. However, due to the large number of networks to be protected, the decision was made to conduct a targeted large-scale threat search operation," the Ministry reported.

The operation saw CERT.LV approach international partners, forming a joint cyber team with cyber experts of the Canadian Armed Forces, representatives from the Canadian Center for Cyber Security, the Belgian Military Cyber Command and the European Union Cyber Security Agency (ENISA).

The team searched for threats in several critical information systems of the Republic of Latvia, but no details were given about what, or how much, they found, or what they did about it.

"This operation provided a better understanding of the attacker and greatly enhanced the cyber capabilities of allied teams and their nations to further protect systems based on shared intelligence," the Defense Ministry asserted.

On November 30, CERT.LV said Russia-aligned hackers have been engaged in "intense" activity against Latvia state and financial websites, but that most attacks had been easily dealt with.
